Poteva essere trasportata sull'obiettivo dai bombardieri strategici Avro Lancaster opportunamente modificati, agganciando l'ordigno esternamente sotto la fusoliera in quanto le sue dimensioni superavano quelle del compartimento bombe interno.

Oltre alla potenza distruttiva la sua onda d'urto veniva impiegata per distruggere porte e finestre nel raggio di parecchie centinaia di metri dal punto dell'esplosione, in modo da "preparare" il percorso al fuoco degli spezzoni incendiari.

Die Grand Slam (engl. „Großer Schlag“) ist mit über zehn Tonnen Gewicht die bis heute schwerste in einem Krieg eingesetzte Fliegerbombe. Die mit konventionellem Sprengstoff gefüllte Sprengbombe wurde Ende 1944 entwickelt und im Zweiten Weltkrieg von den britischen Luftstreitkräften gegen Großziele wie schwer gepanzerte Bunker und Brücken eingesetzt.

The Bomb, Medium Capacity, 22,000 lb (Grand Slam) was a 22,000 lb (10 t) earthquake bomb used by RAF Bomber Command against German targets towards the end of the Second World War. The bomb was originally called Tallboy Large until the term Tallboy got into the press and the code name was replaced by "Grand Slam". The bomb was similar to a large version of the Tallboy bomb but a new design and closer to the size that its inventor, Barnes Wallis, had envisaged when he developed the idea of an earthquake bomb.

Бомба Grand Slam была разработана британским инженером Барнсом Уоллесом и стала развитием идей, заложенных в его предыдущую разработку — бомбу Tallboy.
