Historique
Il est essentiellement connu pour son rôle dans l'opération Looking Glass où il doit servir de poste de commandement aérien en cas de guerre nucléaire pour le Strategic Air Command dans le carde du Post-Attack Command and Control System puis, à partir de 1992, pour le United States Strategic Command de 1961 à 1998[1].

Die Boeing EC-135 ist eine Variante des militärischen Transportflugzeugs C-135 mit spezieller elektronischer Ausrüstung. Die United States Air Force (USAF) setzte sie von 1961 bis 2003 für verschiedene Zwecke ein. Unter anderem nutzte das Strategic Air Command (SAC) sie als luftgestützten Kommandoposten und fliegendes Funkrelais. The Boeing EC-135 is a retired family of command and control aircraft derived from the Boeing C-135 Stratolifter. During the Cold War, the EC-135 was best known for being modified to perform the Looking Glass mission where one EC-135 was always airborne 24 hours a day to serve as flying command post for the Strategic Air Command in the event of nuclear war. Various other EC-135 aircraft sat on airborne and ground alert throughout the Cold War, with the last EC-135C being retired in 1998.
