Die North American A-36 (Firmenbezeichnung NA-97) war ein einmotoriger, einsitziger Ganzmetall-Sturzkampfbomber und Bodenangriffsflugzeug des amerikanischen Flugzeugherstellers North American Aviation, der 1942 aus der North American P-51 Mustang abgeleitet wurde.[1] Bei der USAAF wurde die A-36 ebenfalls als Mustang bezeichnet, während sie von North American und vielen Luftfahrthistorikern den Beinamen Apache erhielt, um sie von der Mustang zu unterscheiden. In der Anfangszeit ihres erfolgreichen Einsatzes in Nordafrika und Italien wurde sie von den Einheiten auch als Invader bezeichnet, diese Namensgebung konnte sich jedoch nicht durchsetzen.[2][en] North American A-36
The North American A-36 (listed in some sources as "Apache" or "Invader", but generally called Mustang) was the ground-attack/dive bomber version of the North American P-51 Mustang, from which it could be distinguished by the presence of rectangular, slatted dive brakes above and below the wings. A total of 500 A-36 dive bombers served in the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia theaters during World War II before being withdrawn from operational use in 1944.- [fr] North American A-36 Apache
