Incident

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, a Cessna 172, carrying three people from the Twin Cities area, took off from Duluth International Airport (DLH) in neighboring Duluth, Minnesota, at 11:12 PM. The pilot had requested and was cleared to fly to South St. Paul Municipal Airport (SGS) in South St. Paul, Minnesota, a distance of approximately 130 nautical miles (150 mi; 240 km). The pilot and his two passengers had arrived at DLH from SGS approximately 12 hours earlier to attend a wedding and reception.

The plane ascended to approximately 2,800 feet (850 m) before descending. It crashed into the top story of a house in Hermantown, Minnesota, where two adults were sleeping, before striking a vehicle and landing upside down on a detached garage at 11:16 PM.[1] All three occupants of the plane were killed.[2] The homeowners were not hurt.[3]

Investigation

An preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed no mechanical issues with the aircraft. The NTSB noted that the pilot had incorrectly read back a departure frequency, but was not corrected by the air traffic controller. Following departure, the plane climbed to 2,800 feet (850 m), then began to descend. The controller contacted the pilot via tower frequency, which was acknowledged. Seconds later, the controller advised the pilot that he was descending, but there was no further response.[2][4]
