Le , un Boeing 737-800 détaché par l'ONU a endommagé les abords de la piste et a détruit des douzaines de feux atterrissants, lorsqu'il tenta une approche basse. Aucun passager n'a été blessé, mais la piste est restée hors service pendant trois semaines.

Bus


Il y a un réseau d'autobus toutes les heures entre le centre-ville de Katowice et l'aéroport. L'autobus quitte chaque heure pleine la Station principale de Katowice et s'arrête près de l'Hôtel Qubus Katowice, du Novotel Katowice. Il prend environ 50 minutes pour effectuer le trajet complet. Le billet coûte 20 PLN (5.5 EUR). Il y a un réseau de bus de l'aéroport à Cracovie et Wroclaw (Wizz Air bus et d'autres).

The airport has the 4th-biggest annual passenger flow in Poland. Katowice Airport is the biggest Polish airport in terms of leisure traffic.[8] It is also the second biggest airport in the country in terms of cargo traffic. It operates a variety of charter, regular and cargo flights. Long-haul flights are operated from Katowice to Varadero in Cuba, Bangkok in Thailand, Cancún in Mexico, Malé in Maldives and to Puerto Plata as well as Punta Cana in Dominican Republic by LOT's Boeing 787s Dreamliner. The airport has the tallest Air Traffic Control Tower[9] and the second longest runway[10] in Poland. Katowice Airport is the Poland's only airport with more than one passenger terminal and the airport with the biggest number of based airlines.[11] The Katowice Airport serves the most industrialised region in Poland, one of the most urbanised areas of Europe. 13 million inhabitants are estimated to live within 100 km of Katowice Airport. This is a larger catchment area than many airports in Europe.[12]
