L'AEG C.III était un biplan de reconnaissance expérimental caractérisé par un profond fuselage occupant tout l’entreplan, ce qui permettait d’ajouter une arme tirant vers l’avant sans risque que les balles ne traversent le disque de l’hélice. L’idée était séduisante mais présentait d’autres défauts, en particulier un manque de visibilité vers le bas, importante pour un appareil de reconnaissance et d’observation. Essayé en 1915 avec un moteur Benz Bz III de 150 ch, le C.III resta un prototype.

Die AEG C.III war ein zweisitziges Aufklärungsflugzeug der AEG, Abteilung Flugzeugbau, welches Ende 1915 als Nachfolge der AEG C.II gebaut wurde. Es kam allerdings nie über den experimentellen Status hinaus. Das Muster sollte dem Piloten eine bessere Sicht nach vorne und dem Beobachter ein besseres Schussfeld nach vorne geben. Dazu wurde der gesamte Zwischenraum zwischen dem oberen und dem unteren Flügelpaar ausgefüllt. Die C.III erhielt dadurch einen mächtigen Rumpf. Trotz dieser sinnvollen Lösung ging die Maschine nie in Serienproduktion.

The AEG C.III was a two-seat biplane reconnaissance aircraft, a single prototype of which was built during World War I. The aircraft featured an unusual fuselage design that completely filled the gap between the upper and lower sets of wings, to provide the pilot with improved vision, and to allow the observer a wider field of fire for his 7.92 mm (.312 in) machine gun. The pilot sat to the rear of the observer, who was stationed over the upper wing. This design was not as successful as had been hoped, and the C.III was never entered into service. Despite being heavier than the C.II, its maximum speed increased to 158 km/h (98 mph).[1]
