It was previously a central public sector undertaking under the ownership of Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. It was incorporated on 30 March 2007 as the National Aviation Company of India Limited by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India under the United Progressive Alliance administration to oversee the merger of Air India, Indian Airlines and Alliance Air.[3] The National Aviation Company was a central public sector undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It was renamed as Air India Limited on 26 October 2010.[4]
Air India Limited was sold by Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India to Tata Group under the tenure of National Democratic Alliance as a move to privatise all of the government establishments in India. On 8 October 2021 Tata Sons paid ₹18,000 crore (US$2.3 billion) to Government of India and Tata will also assume ₹15,300 crore (US$1.9 billion) of Air India Limited's debt as per the transfer deal.[5][6] The remaining ₹46,262 crore (US$5.8 billion) of Air India Limited's debt was also transferred to AIAHL.[7][8]
The Tata Group requested approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to merge AirAsia India with Air India Limited in April 2022,[9] which was granted on 14 June 2022.[10]

Upon completion of remaining stake sale in AirAsia India by AirAsia Bhd on 2nd November 2022 there is now one primary airline, Air India, with two divisions :- (AirAsia India and Air India Express) carriers providing low-cost point-to-point services.
One of the subsidiaries of Air India Limited is AI SATS Airport services limited. Air India Express, and AirAsia India are divisions of Air India Limited.
