L'aeroporto è stato fondato già nel 1935 e oggi rappresenta uno dei più importanti scali della zona. È il terzo hub sia per la compagnia aerea US Airways che per la Great Lakes Airlines. È di grande importanza per la compagnia low cost Southwest Airlines che è largamente cresciuta dal 1982 quando iniziò il servizio. US Airways e Southwest Airlines utilizzano il terminal 4 e rappresentano insieme il 35% del traffico aeroportuale.
Tutti i voli in programma sono interni agli Stati Uniti, eccetto dei voli operati dalla British Airways e dalla American Airlines in direzione dell'aeroporto di Heathrow.
