The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-200.[2][4] The aircraft made its first flight on May 9th, 1984 and was delivered to Delta Air Lines on August 10th of that same year.[5]
The Boeing 737-200 took off from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 1:30 PM CST.[6] As the plane lifted off the ground, the right engine detracted from the wing on takeoff. The pilots were able to land the aircraft at around 12 minutes after the detachment at 1:42 PM CST.[6]
The aircraft remained on the runway as passengers were taken to the airport terminal. Most of the passengers on board the aircraft were boarded on other flights to Houston.[6]
